It’s kind of weird. I’m reminded of the newspapers and paintings in Harry Potter . I found it a little off-putting when I saw that this morning.

WP has been using gifs (normally very low quality ones) for their debate coverage.
On the other hand NYT has had some beautiful high-resolution drone footage (not sure if Aleppo really counts as beautiful these days, but the video was impressive) looping on their homepage. Don’t remember if those are gifs or HTML 5 video though.
